charliecruzlandscapes.com: About me

Portrait or Personal Image - Charlie Cruz

As a youngster I always enjoyed art classes in school, particularly painting and drawing. For a while I used to attend painting classes every Saturday morning. My interest for this art form would eventually dilute and loose strength, a passing phase which never took a hold on me, probably those teenage years never helped.

I cannot recall when I first became interested in photography. I remember as a teenager using an old instamatic my father used to have. Then during the late eighties I was offered a second hand Pentax ME Super and this started the ball rolling. My pet dog Linda became my first subject, and I must admit she was a very good sitter. Wild flowers, insects and some local landscapes were next, sister and parents too. I then joined the Gibraltar Photographic Society, a small but very competitive club affiliated to the Royal Photographic Society. I have competed and exhibited many times with them and have won Gibraltar Photographer of the year twice.

My first solo exhibition was in November 2004, a great experience which I can recommend to anyone aspiring to showcase their work. Though I had sold my work in the past to businesses and private customers it served me as an eye opener and as a launching pad, boosting my confidence tenfold.

This led to creating this website and to have my work published locally and internationally by the advertising industry, I have been commissioned by corporate companies and the Gibraltar Philatelic Bureau, who regularly use my images. Selling my work to private customers and corporate is continually growing as it seems people are starting to consider photography as another art form to display and enjoy at home or at the office.

In 2006 I started working in the realms of large format photography. It doesn't get more basic than using a large and heavy view camera. The process is slow and methodical, anticipating the moment is paramount. The results make it worthwhile though. All that extra time and hard work is forgotten when you see a large transparency upon the lightbox.

My equipment is composed of some excellent Schneider and Rodenstock lenses and a very robust Arca Swiss view camera, which could also be used as a sledge hammer. The images are taken on transparency Fuji films, in the 6x12 and 5x4 formats. In the past I have used a variety of formats, for example 6x17, 6x7, 24x65(xpan) and 35mm formats. Sometimes I use my Nikon D300, but I am afraid this camera does not match the quality of 5x4 film if you have to make large prints.
