Question

Prints and lenses
Hi Charlie,

Sorry I posted this question in the wrong place lower down!!
I have some photos that I am currently working on and I want to print them out beyond conventional print sizes.
Can you recommend any places (Gib/Spain/Overseas) where I can get larger prints developed? I'm looking at sizes of about 30cm x 50cm and maybe slightly larger and slightly smaller. You mention the Cymbolic Sciences Lightjet printers on your site. Is there a printer nearby that deals with this or do you send them away? I gather that they must be pricey too?
I am also about to embark on an architectural study in Lodz, Poland (Where my wife comes from) in the next 6-8 months, also want to try some landscape photography there. I understand what you say about buying too much equipment but I do need to get a sufficient lens for my D200 for both interests. Can you recommend the right lens for the job?

Thanks again

Jason

- Jason Easter 7/18/2007 12:03:42 AM

  Answer Hi Jason,

Large prints are done by www.mps-photographic.co.uk, price depends on what media you use e.g. Fujiflex is very costly. I also print at home on an Epson 4000Pro.
I'm afraid that it is beyond the scope of this Guestbook to try and answer the question about what lens to buy. There is no such thing as a lens can do all or camera for that matter. I could probably bombard you with more questions than answers. Zoom lenses are very handy and you could get away with just two, a 16-35mm and a 70-200mm but they need to be top of the range for best quality, particularly if you are using digital. Though zooms have improved a lot prime lenses tend to offer best quality and you might prefer just to work with a 24mm a 50mm and a 135mm. Beware of those converging lines on buildings when you are using wide angles. That is one of the reasons why architectural photography benefits from using a view camera.
Sorry I cannot give you a straight answer.
Good luck in Poland.

Charlie.

Question

Quality and Vision
Hi,

I'm new to photography (just 1 year) and just have to say that your work is just beautiful and inspirational. You have a talented understanding of light and composition, and if I can get to that standard one day I'll be top trumps! I'm starting a creative arts degree soon with OCA when I finish my professional studies so any tips will be welcomed.

- Jason Easter 6/4/2007 11:28:19 PM

  Answer Hi Jason

Thank you for your kind words. You already seem to have the number one factor you need, which is motivation and if you add some perseverance to the recipe then you are on a winning side.

Don't go buying lots of equipment, stick to the basics and learn them inside out. In this day an age everyone wants you to buy, don't fall into the trap.

I think at first you can learn a lot by getting experienced photographers to judge your work and getting some constructive criticism. This could be your local club, or the web. Try and put your work into competitions, or give yourself tasks to work on e.g. photographing an object or a place at different times of the day with different light and moods. Study other photographers work and go and see as many exhibitions as you can. Judging other peoples work can make you a better judge of your own.

Good luck with your studies.
All the best,
Charlie.

P.S. Don't forget to work that light.

Photography
Hey Mr. Charlie its me again. I posted here before and that I was in year eleven. Now, I am currently studying photography in college. The theme that I will be focusing are rural landscapes. Any tips for what i'll be capturing. It will be appreciated! Your new photos are stunning!

  Answer Hi Adrian,
It's good to see people coming back.
Excellent you are going to study photography, with a chance like that give it all youv'e got mate, go for it.
Once youv'e mastered the technical side of it the best tip I can give you is patience. Patience to try and capture that special light we all search for. So the light, the timing and composition...and a bit of more light as a good measure.

Good luck in your studies.
Charlie.

Question

What can I say...
Charlie

I can but help to agree with your sister this is art.

I am left speechless at some of the captured images...

I still remember seeing you in the early eighties around school and at the Mack Hall camera in hand and you have developed into a credit to Gibraltar's artisitic spirit...maybe not so speechless.

I believe your patience and perseverance would make Job envious.

Keep up the good work

Keep it going

- James Byrne 9/30/2005 2:50:55 AM

  Answer Thank you James,

Yes it all started sometime in the mid to late eighties as a hobby and it all grew from there. Nowadays the interest is even stronger and still rising. Got to be wary though, my wife is getting jealous about all those lens and cameras.

Charlie.
